Around 99 percent of U.S. hospitals had partially or completely implemented EHRs in 2016, up from 33.6 percent in 2003, according to survey results published in the American Journal of Health-System Pharmacy.
Researchers polled a random sample of pharmacy directors at 1,315 hospitals in the U.S. in 2016. Respondents completed the survey on paper or online. IMS Health supplied data on hospital characteristics.
Here are four findings:
1. By 2016, 43.3 percent of hospitals had completely implemented EHRs and 55.7 percent had partially implemented the systems.
2. Around 95.6 percent of hospitals used a computerized prescriber order entry system with clinical decision support in 2016, up significantly from 2.7 percent in 2003.
3. Approximately 92.6 percent of hospitals had barcode-assisted medication administration systems.
4. The survey shows EHR implementation by hospital size in 2016:
● Less than 50 beds — 98.4 percent
● 50-99 beds — 100 percent
● 100–199 beds — 98.4 percent
● 200–299 beds — 100 percent
● 300-399 beds — 100 percent
● 400-599 beds — 100 percent
● More than 600 beds — 100 percent
